Background of the Study
E-commerce has revolutionized the way businesses operate, providing small business owners with an opportunity to reach a broader audience through online platforms. In Jigawa State, online vendors have increasingly adopted e-commerce platforms to sell a variety of products, ranging from groceries to clothing. E-commerce allows small business owners to bypass traditional retail barriers and reach customers across the state and beyond (Bello & Abdullahi, 2023). Despite these advantages, small business owners in Jigawa State face significant challenges in adopting e-commerce, including limited internet access, low digital literacy, and competition from larger businesses.

This study seeks to appraise the challenges faced by small business owners in Jigawa State who engage in e-commerce, focusing on the barriers they encounter and how they overcome these challenges. It will also examine how e-commerce can contribute to the growth and sustainability of small businesses in the region.

Statement of the Problem
While e-commerce offers significant benefits to small business owners, many in Jigawa State struggle to effectively utilize online platforms due to various challenges. These barriers limit their ability to fully capitalize on the potential of e-commerce for business growth. This study will explore the challenges small business owners in Jigawa State face in operating e-commerce businesses and provide insights on how these challenges can be overcome.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of e-commerce in the growth and sustainability of small businesses in Jigawa State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by small business owners in Jigawa State when engaging in e-commerce.
  3. To recommend strategies to overcome the barriers to successful e-commerce adoption for small business owners in Jigawa State.

Research Questions

  1. How does e-commerce contribute to the growth and sustainability of small businesses in Jigawa State?
  2. What challenges do small business owners in Jigawa State face when engaging in e-commerce?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome the challenges of e-commerce adoption for small businesses in Jigawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: E-commerce does not significantly contribute to the growth and sustainability of small businesses in Jigawa State.
  2. H0: Limited access to the internet does not significantly affect the success of e-commerce businesses in Jigawa State.
  3. H0: The lack of digital literacy does not significantly hinder small business owners in Jigawa State from successfully adopting e-commerce.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on small business owners who engage in e-commerce in Jigawa State. Limitations include challenges in accessing relevant data from small businesses and potential biases in self-reported responses.

Definitions of Terms

  1. E-Commerce: The buying and selling of goods and services through the internet.
  2. Small Business Owners: Individuals who operate small-scale businesses, often with limited resources and a local customer base.
  3. Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and platforms to access, manage, and communicate information.
